Caution is Best Policy

When it comes to concussions, patience and caution is the best policy.

Sixty-six players this season have suffered from concussions or from concussion-like symptoms throughout the NHL.

This article in the Washington Post concerning Nicklas Backstrom is enlightening and well researched for our fans.

Nick continues to be day to day. He is missed but he won’t be rushed back into play.

We care for Nick as a player and more importantly as a person.

He will have a long and productive career with us. He signed a 10 year contract with us as you all know.

Wish him well in his recovery.

Mike Green continues to skate and get back into shape. We hope to see him back in the line up in a few weeks. He is missed as well.

Injuries are a part of the game. Onward.

More on the obvious

As noted yesterday in my blog; we are shorthanded at center and on defense; and every point will matter from here on out. See this story in the Washington Post as well

Florida picked up a point last night and they are back into first place in the Southeast Division. We are now back in the 7th spot in the East.

We play the Islanders at home this evening; we have the game in hand. This will be a see saw battle from here on out.

Mike Green will undergo surgery; and will be out for 4 to 6 additional weeks. We all wish Mike a speedy recovery- he is missed; and he has basically missed the last two regular season campaigns for us now. I am hopeful that Mike can rejoin the team and make positive contributions for us and his team mates later in the season. We need all of the help we can get.

See you all tonight at Verizon Center. Go Caps!

Have to fight through it

Mike Green had missed 55 of the last 65 regular season games to a series of injuries. Our fans and Mike’s team mates were very excited to see him back on the ice against the Flames.

In that same game – Alex Semin was off the ice. He suffered an injury and is listed as day to day.

And now Nick Backstrom is listed as day to day. I believe the league did the right thing in doling out a 5 game suspension and a fine for the play that injured Nick.

We gained one player of our 4 young guns back into the lineup; and lost two more the same day. One step forward – two steps back.

Injuries are a part of life in pro sports; we have to fight through it. Other teams have suffered big time injuries and have continued to prosper and we must do so as well.

We are starting to play well; but now we are quite shorthanded – as we go out West for a short but tough road trip.

Wish us well; we are not even at the half way point of the season; as bad as the media has written us off – we are playing at about a 94 to 96 point pace. We must continue to improve and get healthy – and be productive as we have noted – every game is important and every point matters. Thank you and Go Caps!

Caps Win Again at Home

Four in a row.

We saw terrific play in goal.

We scored fast on a power play.

We killed off all of our penalties.

Alex Ovechkin is on fire of late with another goal and an assist last night.

Mike Green is back. We are undefeated with Mike in the line up, 9-0.

Alex Semin is off the ice with an injury.

See this story from Japers’ on how much time our core of four players has actually played together.

We are now 7th in the East with 44 points and a game in hand on the SE division leader.

We are making progress with more than half of the season left to play. Everyone is still bunched up in the standings but it is positive to see progress on our behalf.

Thanks Caps fans for your loyalty and patience and support in 2011.

Professional Grade

The win last night was professional grade.

We have much depth and secondary scoring this season; we are hard to defend because the scoring comes from so many places. We seem to be developing a real team scoring mentality.

I am happy that our goal tending shows great depth as well.

And we are weathering the loss of Mike Green on the blue line; as John Erskine is now back and logging big minutes .

We are 9 and 2 – 18 points all in. We have 71 games left to play – an amazing amount of games left to play this season with the next one tonight against the Islanders.

Onward – and thank you .

A Good Ongoing Series

Peerless is writing good stuff; good analysis here.

We do have a core of young players that we started the rebuild around; ” the Young Guns” and we have added to it with even younger players of late – and then added to it with vets this off season.

This is all a part of a narrative of trying to find the goldilocks phenomenon; “Yum … just right”.

But clearly our highest paid players – Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom and Green; are the straws that stir the drink.

Health plays a big role in their productivity.

I also think special teams play is key to our team’s productivity in the playoffs; and to the individual stats during the year for this core group.

Great power play during the regular season – and the playoffs – the better we will do as a team.

Good health helps a lot too!

Smart Stuff a Comin

Data. Stats .Analytics. Formed opinions.

I look forward to reading this series from Peerless regardless of where the data may take us.

I am very appreciative of folks that do so much work and invest so much time in thinking about hockey and our team. And then presenting their thoughts in such a well-reasoned manner.

I look forward to see how Alex Ovechkin and Alex Semin, Mike Green and Nick Backstrom perform in playoff games too; according to Peerless.

Who knows where his data will go – but at least it is well reasoned and researched.

To all of you out there that do the work; and don’t just opine. I wanted you to know how much I respect the process and the outcome and the work.

Thanks again. Go Caps!
