Caps Beat Rangers

A good win at home; we needed the two points. Thanks Caps fans for being loud and proud.

We missed several open nets; we could have scored 6 goals; but we are very appreciative of scoring 4 and holding the red hot Rangers to only 1 goal.

Our goal tender was calm and made big saves when necessary and our penalty killing units played really well.

Congratulations to Alex Semin too for a two goal game and to Alex Ovechkin for his two assists; that gives him points in 5 games in a row.

It feels good to win one after two straight losses; thank you – Go Caps!

Good and Bad

Thank you Caps fans. Last night’s showing by you was quite impressive. Every seat was taken. Every SRO spot was filled. If I counted 100 people in blue Rangers Jerseys I would be surprised so helping us to keep home ice advantage was critical to our success. As one season ticket holder noted to me in an email, “Thank you for creating demand and a waiting list. I am reselling some tickets but I make sure I only sell them to Caps fans. I make them prove it to me, too. I fill your house with Red and these transactions help me to offset the season ticket prices.”

I thought that was a very nice sentiment.

I also want to note that I saw true restraint last night as I saw a Rangers fan running up the stairs near our box; scream an ugly curse word at one of our fans; and then as he returned offered his back-handed middle finger to the entire set of rows as he ran down the stairs. His gesture was met with a chant by Caps fans and some laughter but not by anything more dangerous. I asked security if we should eject the person but as we watched he calmed down and all remained good and focused on the game.

I ask for some dignity and consideration by all fans. Throwing items onto the ice or in the arena is simply unacceptable. If you are found to be a culprit, our security people have been instructed to find you and escort you out of the building. We would suspend you as a season ticket holder. This is dangerous and unacceptable.

Fan, safety and security is our number one priority.

Please enjoy the game. It is OK to banter and be passionate but I ask that you don’t cross the line: No threatening cursing; no throwing of items; and no true threatening gestures. Also remember that just about everything you do in public today is caught on a camera of some sort. We live in a truly transparent world. Be aware; be courteous; and enjoy the games. Try to represent our fan base in a good way. Thanks so much.

I will leave the hockey game day analysis to the experts.

Thank you Caps fans.

I Know the Feeling

Click here and see. This is cool.

Thank you Caps fans.

A great turnout last night– a sea of red. A loud building. It was a great environment. A hard fought OT win.

Win or lose last night we can’t get too up or too down. This is going to be a long and tough series. The New York Rangers are a great team with a fantastic goaltender.

Thanks for coming out and for being so supportive. The players notice and they feed off of your energy.

Go Caps! See you on Friday night!

Tough and Fair

A good article all about our pending playoff series with the New York Rangers.

We respect the New York Rangers and every team that has qualified for the playoffs.

No bulletin board fodder from us. We want to be all about business and respect the game and the opponent.

I appreciate ESPN nationally for covering our series and for Scott being here in DC to meet and talk to our players and coaches and come to the games. That is very nice of him and them.

Yes I Know That Was an Ugly Game

In so many regards.

And not what we wanted to see. We wanted to see some wins and some points garnered on home ice. And we wanted to see our core group of players back on the ice together.

We didn’t see any of that last night.

And I didn’t get to see the game at Verizon Center because of sitting on a tarmac on a plane for three hours. I did get to listen to the second period on the radio and I watched the third period on television. I think I liked being on the tarmac better.

No time to whine and angst. We play again tonight in Long Island against a much improved Islanders team.

See You All Tonight

I am on the road but will hustle back to DC to catch the Caps vs. Rangers game at Verizon Center.

There are only 21 games left to play with 11 more at home starting tonight.

Looking at some top line stats: Did you think we would be 3rd best in the East with only 153 goals against when the season started? We are 4th best of the 16 teams that would qualify for the playoffs today.

We now need to get the fore check working again; score on the power play; and enjoy watching the streaking and highly productive Alex Ovechkin.

Go Caps! We need to get back to our winning ways at Verizon Center. Help us rock that red. Go Caps!

Take Two Points and Call Me in the Morning

No emails this morning criticizing the win. Thank you.

We take two more points from a tough team in NYC at MSG. We retake a lead and we hold on for a win.

Five wins in a row.

At this point in time we have the most points in the NHL at 22. We are 11-4.

Most goals scored. Best goals scored to goals allowed differential in the NHL.

And we promise to improve and play better.

We have much work to do but we seem to be learning how to win in almost every different situation. And we have been able to throw our young players into the pool; allow them to learn how to swim; and overcome some mistakes to help them learn how to play in the NHL.

We next play the much improved and exciting Tampa Bay Lightning team on Thursday at home. I am very respectful to them. I admire how they have rebuilt their team around young players and new ownership.

Go Caps!

Others’ Views

In talking with some folks in NYC, they think the Caps are:

  • Having a great season and are “scary good”; it is why we have such a good record
  • That we are a high scoring team
  • That we have improved defense schemes
  • That our penalty kill has improved
  • That our goaltending is much improved
  • That Alex Ovechkin is having a great and more balanced season of play
  • That we have more balance in our line up now; we are tougher to play against; and the coach has more weapons and line ups to mix and match.

Isn’t that funny?

One pundit pointed to our two wins this weekend against the best of the East in Boston and Philadelphia as proof points of progress and our record as being tied for most points in the NHL .

But then again, there is this locally in DC.

We get “the joke.”

Expectations are high. People are not satisfied – deservedly so. Angst away but try just a little bit to enjoy the ride.

We play a big game in NYC tonight so wish us well. Madison Square Garden is always a tough place to play.

A New York Post Story for Some Caps Fans

I thought this Larry Brooks article was of interest because it mentioned some former Caps fan favorites.

At the trading deadline last year, several fans were emailing us and demanding we find a way “to do anything in your power to bring these players back to the fold – I am begging you.”

Just thought this off season rumor was interesting on this hot summer day. Check it out.

Another Road Win – Another Injury

Alex is back. He scores on his first shot on goal in his return.

Matt Bradley rocks. Way to go, Matt!

Quintin Laing is hurt - a broken jaw - yikes. That hurts and that is such a shame.

It was another road game, a good win and another two points. We are back to first place in the East. We have the second most points in the NHL right now. We have miles to go before we sleep but getting a big win on the road last night and having Alex Ovechkin return has got to bring a smile to some of your faces. It does to mine. Go Caps!
