Falling Short of Measuring Up

Our goal tending wasn’t very good.

We didn’t score on our 3 power plays. We couldn’t get a transition or cycling game going on our own.

We lose 5 to 1 to a shorthanded Flyer team.

As noted within this article – the team has a lot of work to do; we have fallen behind the Jets in the divisional standings; we play them in Winnipeg on Thursday.

No time like the present to get some points and start playing up to our capabilities. Thank you for caring so much.

Caps vs. Flyers Preview

Tonight is a big game at home.

We play the Philadelphia Flyers.

Both teams are riddled with injuries.

We both have to overcome them.

Our Coach has a history against the Flyers.

We will be in a new conference with the Flyers starting soon; we will play them more frequently in the future.

Read this preview – see you all tonight at the game – wear red and be loud and proud please. Go Caps!

Number 68

That was the number of the suite the Flyers provided me at the game last night – ironic, no?

That was a fun game – an intense game – a game that we all wanted to see.

We played well after going down 1 to 0. I was happy to see Alex Ovechkin score 2 goals; see highlights within.

We are now 6 and 0.

Not a lot more needs to be said for the moment. Go Caps. See you all Saturday night as we face off against the Detroit Red Wings.

Doesn’t Matter How

It matters how many.

We qualify for the playoffs for the fourth season in a row. Well done front office, coach, staff and team. Well done.

We win in Philly in a shootout. We have played four games against the Flyers this season and all went to OT. We get six standing points.

We have now won 13 of 15 games. We have 96 points. We are third in the NHL and we are second in the East.

We are in first place in Southeast and seven points ahead of the second place team.

We only have eight games left to play this regular season.

We are missing Ovechkin, Green, Arnott, and Poti from the lineup but we are healing as we are winning.

Go Caps!

I Was In Philly

For the game last night.

I attended and sat in the stands with a good friend. I paid a visit to Ed Snider, owner of the Flyers and his family. I visited with my son and his friends from U Penn who also attended the game.

The Flyers fans were very nice to me. I sat in row B. There was some mild trash talk but overall the experience of sitting in the stands with the fans was a lot of fun. There were several Caps fans sitting near me. Thank you for being so supportive and protective as well. Go Caps!

We played a very good game last night. Very tight defense with no penalties to speak of and no power plays either.

We came back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period and tied the game to grab a standings point. We lost in OT but I thought the game was well played at a high tempo. We are short-handed on offense and our coach did a great job in utilizing all of our players in a creative fashion within the new system. It was great to see Alex Ovechkin score, too, basically right in front of our seats.

We played a good game on the road against the team with the best record in the NHL. Onward.

My Observations on Last Night

The Flyers and the Caps are playing like they are two of the very best teams in the NHL and two of the highest scoring teams in the NHL, too. The game last night was a true heavyweight fight and frankly it was a shame that the officials were noticed a lot during the game. And I mean calling penalties on both teams – 9 on us and 7 on them. With 16 penalties, more than half the game was played 5 on 4 or 5 on 3. It really is disruptive to flow; line up adjustments; and getting players minutes. And to watching great hockey.

The game becomes a special team’s highlight film so it was also sensible I guess that the game ended in a shoot out, another skills kind of competition that isn’t focused on 5 on 5 play.

Even with the randomness of the night, the fans were treated to a great game. We get one point and the Flyers get two points. We remain in first place in the NHL with 30 points.

If you look at the standings, the teams that are most impressive right now are Boston and Montreal. Check out their goals against, a true carry over from last year’s playoff runs for both teams. Quite impressive and daunting.

I am proud of our fortitude. We kept battling back from deficits.

I am proud that the team is hanging together through the loss of key players to injuries.

I am proud that the team is playing productively while some of our best players are in a bit of a funk. That shows depth and maturity and that we are not a one player team or a one line team.

I saw two odd incidents last night at the game. The first one: I was standing in the event level of the arena with George McPhee and a bunch of hockey players from our community were walking to the little training rooms where the players store their equipment for playing games after the NHL game as part of our community involvement. Many of the parents of the kids were wearing Caps jerseys but one dad was wearing a Flyers jersey. I said as they walked by, “Hi guys. Have fun tonight. I thought this space was reserved just for Caps fans. Are you a Caps fan?” :-) The dad turns at me and sneers, “No. I am a fan of the only team here that went to the Stanley Cup Finals last year. Come on son.”

Nice. Let no good deed go unpunished.

Then as I was leaving the arena, there were about 100 Caps fans walking by the Mall near Chinatown just minding their business, walking home after the game, and eight Flyers fans literally came running up to them – beers in hand – and start chanting “Let’s go Flyers!” One young tattooed lady literally tripped on the curb in running; fell; and as she lay on the ground laughing started to scream “Lets Go Flyers!” I am proud to say the Caps fans laughed and just walked away. As I waited at the red light, all I could think of was how well behaved our fans were and how I was grateful that a fight of some sort didn’t break out right then and there. Thanks Caps fans. I am proud of you.

Caps Now 7-1 at Home

Yesterday was a good win over the very tough and very talented Philadelphia Flyers team.

We are now 10-4 with 20 points. We are tied with the Flyers for most points in the East although they have played one more game than we have. We are tied for most points in the NHL with LA although they have only played 13 games to our 14 games.

We have a really terrific home record now at 7-1. Thanks to our fan base for urging our team on to victory after victory.

We played tough even though we played short-handed. Kudos to our really young goaltender making his first NHL start. Varlamov. Neuvirth. Holtby. You can say our future is bright in goal.

I am proud of the team. We played quite productively this weekend winning two games over Boston and Philadelphia, two of the best teams in the league.

Now on to NYC and the New York Rangers then back home to face the red hot Tampa Bay Lightning. No rest for the weary. Thank you. Go Caps!

Both Teams Belong

You are what your playoff record says you are.

I wish we were still playing.

The Flyers and Canadiens may have had the lowest seeds in the regular season to qualify to play in the playoffs but who wouldn’t trade places with them?

The Canadiens beat us and beat Pittsburgh.

The Flyers came back from a 3 to 0 series deficit against the Bruins. They came back from a 3-0 lead by Boston in game 7 on the road to win the series. That is historic.

Both teams are deserving. Anything can and will happen in the playoffs.

This will be a great series. In the West, things went pretty much according to plan with the Sharks playing the Blackhawks. This season in the East anything can happen and it did. Kudos to both teams.
