3 of 6 Points on Road Trip

Three games and three points on the road. This is an acceptable pace. Play 500 on the road and play well at home from here on out will help us dramatically in the standings.

Yesterday we played a really intense game and lost in overtime in Pittsburgh. Both teams are short-handed and battled to the end.

I was proud of how the team rallied on the road to get that point.

NBC has got to be happy with the back and forth nature of the game.

See you all on Tuesday night against defending Stanley Cup champs the

Boston Bruins.

The more things change

The more they stay the same.

If the season ended today – the Capital’s would qualify for the playoffs, and we would be playing in the first round against the NY Rangers. Sound familiar? Only this time they would be the first seed and the Caps would be ranked in the 8th spot.

We are half way through the season; we have garnered 46 points. We are second in the SE division; Florida has 50 points with 42 games played – we have 46 points with 41 games played. There is a ton of hockey left to play this season.

I was impressed with the way both teams played last night. We must be realistic – both teams are really banged up – both teams miss their number 1 centers and number 1 D men; both teams have been traveling much of late. Despite that – both teams played hard – with energy and the game was hard hitting and intense.

We were fortunate to come out with a 1 to 0 win; behind stellar goal tending.

Thanks Caps fans for turning out in big numbers last night – we have a few games now at home – to kick off the second half of the season. Wish us well; see you all on Friday against Tampa. Go Caps!

Caps vs. Pens tonight

The game marks the half-way point of the season for the Capitals.

The teams are essentially having similar first halves of the season; Penguins have played 41 games and have 46 points; the Caps have played 40 games and have 44 points.

Both teams have suffered many injuries to key players

But I am sure the game will be intense as we battle for two important points this evening.

There is always an excitement in the air locally as we play Pittsburgh; which is a testament to the Penguins; their fans; and to our franchise and fan base!

Must see TV too.

See you all tonight- Go Caps!

Wish Us Well Tonight

As we play the best team in the NHL right now – tonight at Verizon Center.

I watched our practice session yesterday – we are in the midst of a pretty radical change of systems and philosophy.

As someone said yesterday, “you can’t play one way in the regular season, and then try to play another way during the playoffs”.

I thought that summed it up quite well.

Now our focus must turn to learning; adapting; with a focus on systems and defense.

It is a long season – we have so much work to do. We must play one game at a time. We must gain some confidence. If the season ended today we wouldn’t be a playoff team. We must be humbled and work hard.

It is like repairing the engines on a plane while the plane is in the air – filled with passengers!

See you all tonight – Go Caps! Thank you.

14-3 and 1

That is our record now on Super Bowl Sundays.

5 of 6 points so far this season from the Pens.

We get the two standing  points.

We played well; while  still missing Semin, Fehr and Poti and Mike Green for most of the game.

The Pens played really well too considering who was out of their lineup.

These games are very competitive and fun and intense. Regardless of who is playing and who is sitting.

I won’t comment on the Matt Cooke hit on Alex Ovechkin; I know many  of you will.

Just a game– a regular season game– we need standings points– we are still  5th in the East; we are ten points ahead of the 9th place team in the conference–with a game in hand. 28 games left to play.

Go Caps– see you all on Tuesday as we play San Jose Sharks; no rest for the weary.

I Would Say the Same Thing If We Had Lost

Thank you.

The entire Winter Classic experience was epic; and fun; and magnificent; and great for the league and for all fans.

Thank you to the NHL league offices. The care they display in putting on such an incredible spectacle is amazing. I love the Winter Classic. I am a fan of the game and I am so happy we were a part of this romantic and big time new tradition. That the NHL now owns New Year’s Day on network television is a wonderful accomplishment! Kudos to everyone at the NHL! The Winter Classic is truly a CLASSIC!

Thank you to Pittsburgh for being such gracious hosts. The city looked fantastic under the lights. The people and fans were fun to be with. The city provided great services to our fans; and everyone was respectful and nice and we had a great time at the stadium. The Penguins and the Steelers’ organizations were very supportive of us and they have a modern and world class set of stadiums and arenas and organizations that is for sure. We were treated well. I promise to return the favor and the care if we ever can reciprocate. To be honest, our local government here in DC can learn a lot from Pittsburgh as they (Government and franchises) work hand in glove in such a seamless manner to support their sports teams. They truly understand the importance of competition and pro sports and its role in civic pride and economic stimulus. World class all around. A great sports city.

Thank you HBO. Thanks for becoming a part of the family. I believe 24/7 on HBO will win a bunch of Emmy Awards. It is just fantastic production quality; great storytelling; reality programming at its finest showing people and players – warts and all – helping to reach a wider audience to help promote the game we all love and respect. This work was classic as well. Epic and I guess I will enjoy watching this final episode more than the first episode if I can confess. As I noted, “We were lost and now we are found.” A typical made-for-television drama. We will miss you HBO crew. Now go home!

Thank you to the players on both teams. They are heroes. So much competition. They are warriors playing in the elements. Pond Hockey comes to life. Thank you for all you do. The Winter Classic takes its toll on players. It inhales energy and bandwidth at high rates and then you get to play again on Tuesday. Thank you very much. No rest for the weary, that is for sure.

Thank you to our fans. Wow. It was so heart warming to see so many Caps fans in Pittsburgh braving the elements and making such a big investment of time and money and energy over a holiday weekend. I can’t say enough nice things. I am so touched by your support. I mean it. That was just awesome to see.

We win a game we get two points. We get to play another important game on Tuesday against the hottest team in the NHL and the team in first place in our Division, Tampa. Here we go. We aren’t even at the half way point of the season yet. We are on a 100 point pace. We are playing smarter hockey. The world didn’t end when we lost 8 games in a row. We have miles to go before we sleep.

Savor the moment. Get some sleep and rest. Show gratitude. Go Caps! Thank you. Just CLASSIC!
