Sport For Social Change Comes to DC

“Join this team, change your life.” That’s the challenge Street Soccer USA has been putting to teens and adults struggling with homelessness. The program offers a sense of belonging, mentorship, life skills training, and connections to jobs and job training to dedicated participants. If you love sports and enjoyed the passion of the FIFA World Cup you won’t want to miss the national Street Soccer USA Cup competition that the Leonsis Foundation is once again bringing to Washington, DC. On July 30th at 5pm, 23 teams based at social service centers from coast to coast will compete for a national championship in street soccer, a fast paced 4 vs. 4 style game. The games are hosted by the Washington Kastles at their center city stadium on 10th and H Street and finish Sunday at 3pm.

There are three great ways for you to get involved:
1. Come out at 5pm on July 30th to attend the Opening Match and Parade kicked off by Mayor Adrian Fenty. (If you register your group or business online SSUSA will announce your attendance over the PA and your group will also be entered in drawing for select giveaways at the Cup)
2. You can enter your own team to play on the official stadium gamefield in the Street Soccer USA Open Cup.
3. Sign up to volunteer

Go Will Go

Here is a great story about a very cool sports team owner in town, Will Chang, who now owns completely the DC United. Click here for the story.

DC United is the most successful franchise in town if you look at the last decade in terms of wins and championships. They are the premiere winner in town.

Will is a great executive and a passionate leader. DC United is and will be in very good hands. Go Will Go.

Major New York Times Story on Homeless Soccer

Wow. Here is a major piece on homeless soccer in the New York Times. As a reminder, this was the subject of our film Kicking It, available on SnagFilms. Thanks again to ESPN for showing this film to a worldwide audience. Click here to watch it.
Also, we will be hosting the US based Homeless World Cup qualifiers again here in Washington DC in late June. Stay tuned for more details.

Kudos to Lawrence Cann and his team for doing the Lord’s work here.

PG United

Wow, big news here from DC United. There is a new planned stadium and move out to Prince George’s County. A new world class facility will do wonders for the team’s viability and economics.

In this economy, creating a private public partnership is a smart and savvy move. We will miss DC United if they move but a new stadium and world class real estate development is needed to kick start the growth of MLS here in our area. Kudos to DC United if they can get this legislation passed and break ground on new digs.
