An Update on Today’s News

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

It hasn’t been my desire to comment on the status of the discussions between Lincoln Holdings - the partnership group I’m involved in that owns the Washington Capitals and Washington Mystics and WSELP, which owns the Wizards, the Verizon Center, and the Washington-area Ticketmaster franchise. Yet with the news reports out there this morning, it probably makes sense to clear some things up. The first thing I’d like to point out that I think is getting lost in all of this is that I am part of WSELP, too. My partners and I already own 44% of WSELP; that means we already own nearly half of an NBA team, the Verizon Center and the Ticketmaster franchise. So when I hear people talk about this or that happening with WSELP, I’m not sure they understand that I am part of WSELP, a big part of WSELP!

Ten years ago, when Abe Pollin and I forged our partnership, we not only created a set of rights for me as a partner in WSELP, but we also agreed on a orderly process for Lincoln and me to acquire the Pollin family’s share of WSELP when he passed away. The process we agreed to, set out in an agreement that Abe and I both signed, was that if his heirs and my partners and I could not agree on a valuation of the team, we would start an appraisal process designed to arrive at a fair market value for the Pollin family’s share of WSELP (including the Verizon Center and the Wizards). The idea was to make it possible for us to do this transaction at a price that was fair to both sides. I’m not sure how or why someone would object to a process that is simply designed to arrive at a fair market value, so I was very surprised to read in the paper today that the Executors of Mr. Pollin’s Estate are attempting to find a way around the appraisal process Mr. Pollin put into place for my partners and me-and only my partners and me — to pay fair market value for the portion of the WSELP properties we don’t already own. We were even more surprised to see that a memo was circulated to WSELP employees (and keep in mind I already own 44% of WSELP) that didn’t even mention the appraisal process that Mr. Pollin agreed to more than 10 years ago and that the Pollin estate (through their lawyers) have committed to in writing. I’m sure this must have been an oversight on their part.

My partners and I are already very involved in the workings of the Verizon Center, and the teams that play there and keep in mind, we already own nearly half of the Wizards and the Verizon Center. On top of that, the Capitals play 41 regular season games there, as well as pre-season and playoff games, and the Washington Mystics play a minimum of 17 games. We have an extensive knowledge of sports team ownership and economics, and are proud that among the teams that play at the Verizon Center, the Capitals are doing the best financially. The Capitals are one of the fastest-growing teams in all of sports, we’ve created a very healthy business model, which is sustainable and strong. We sell out every game. We generate fantastic TV ratings, are a league leader in merchandise sales, and our sponsorship sales are growing. In fact, in every metric of our business, we’re growing.

Over the years that I’ve been the principal owner of the Capitals, I’ve learned a lot about sports team ownership. It was from Abe Pollin himself that I learned owning a team is a public trust. I have learned that owners have a responsibility to do everything in their power to build a great team that can achieve immortality for their fans by striving to win championships, and I hope with the Caps I’ve shown that that I’ve learned a great deal about the right way to build a winning team. I would like to restore a winning tradition to the Wizards, and help the team - and its fans in the Washington area - achieve the rewards that come from competing for a championship.

I am very confident this process will move forward in the manner Mr. Pollin and I agreed to in 1999. The last thing the Wizards need now is more uncertainty. My partners and I are confident in the rights we have, and will make sure to protect them.

In the first phase of the orderly process Mr. Pollin and I agreed to conduct by which Lincoln Holdings could acquire the share of WSELP we don’t already own, we suggested a price that would have amounted to one of the highest prices ever paid for an NBA team. We did that with full knowledge of the marketplace and an intimate view of the operations of the Wizards and Verizon Center.

The Pollin Estate didn’t agree to sell at that price, which of course was their right. That simply meant that we now move to the appraisal process. We have appointed an appraiser to set a value for WSELP, as required by the Agreement Mr. Pollin and I signed in 1999. Earlier this week, the Estate’s lawyers told us in writing that they are in the process of hiring an appraiser and assured us that they intend to pursue the appraisal in good faith. As the Agreement makes clear, if their appraisers and ours differ on a valuation, a neutral, third appraiser will be chosen to come in and establish fair market value and then Lincoln Holdings has the sole right to purchase the properties at the appraised price. Let me say that again so that it’s clear: at the end of the appraisal process established in my agreement with Mr. Pollin, there is only one person or entity that has the right to buy the outstanding share of WSELP: My partnership, Lincoln Holdings. The point of the appraisal is to establish a Fair Market Value for WSELP, that’s what the Agreement says and I’m willing and able to hold up my end of the deal. I should also note that in addition to the appraisal right I just described, Lincoln has many other rights, including Rights of First Refusal, Tag-Along rights and other related WSELP partnership and Lincoln purchase agreement rights.

Since this is, I hope, the only time I’ll be speaking out until the appraisal process is completed and we have an opportunity to acquire WSELP for the appraised price, I do want to clear up one other matter that has been in the public. Lincoln Holdings is very well capitalized and the Capitals are financially succeeding as a stand-alone company. We have very little debt against our ownership position in our teams, and zero debt against our 44% WSELP position. The Caps are not only playing great on the ice but doing very well financially.

We have been willing to take on the acquisition of WSELP even knowing that the Wizards are losing money this season and facing challenges that were also reported today. We are willing to do this because we want the Washington community to have multiple teams vying for championships. Wish us luck!

Late Night D.C. Sports

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

I stayed up late last night. Went to bed at 1:00 am.

I watched the Caps game on Comcast SportsNet and I toggled back and forth to the Wizards game on CSN Plus. Both teams are out on West Coast road trips.

I though the Caps vs. Canucks game was a terrific game. We lost 3-2 but I thought we played well. It was like a playoff game. They scored on their power plays. We didn’t and that was that. There is nothing to overanalyze. The Canucks are a very good team. We are on the road. It was a close game. No one to blame. Win as a team; lose as a team. The refs played their role and we can’t complain. We just have to rise above it all and fight through it and win against very good teams on tough road trips. That was the kind of game I would have liked us see go to OT and get at least a point. I didn’t understand the 4 minute penalty on Tom Poti where the game was sealed by the Canucks but we have to stay out of the box at game’s end on the road.

We trudged on to Edmonton after the game where we play tonight. December is a tough month for us in terms of travel with two West Coast swings, 13 games and 8 on the road. At the end of December, we will have played 22 games on the road and 18 at home. It all evens up at some point so we can’t complain. Almost half the season will be over come end of the year. Wow. The season is flying by, isn’t it?

It was good to see the Wizards end a losing streak. It was fantastic to see Gilbert Arenas play with abandon and passion and get great results scoring 45 points. The Wizards play tonight in Phoenix, back to back.

Tough schedules on the road for both teams.

“I Did Me.”

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

The other day I was at Verizon Center for a Mystics related meeting. As I went to my car in the parking lot, I saw Gilbert Arenas. We talked for a few moments.

I said, “Hi Gil. You lost some weight? Tell me your secret ’cause you look great.”

Gil says, “What do I look like? What kind of animal?”

I say, ”A panther!”

Gil laughs, gives me a pound and says, ”Yes, that is what I am and I am gonna pounce. I am a proud black panther!”Was he ever last night! Kudos to the team for winning its opener on the road against a tough Dallas team. I am very happy for the Pollin family and for Abe. Way to go.

As a Fan - As a Partner

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

I believe in this year’s team. I think the Washington Wizards have a very good mix of vets, size, skill and talent with a new world class coaching staff and a big ole chip on the collective shoulders of the team.

The key for this team is cohesion and health. End of story.

There are many new players to be integrated into the lineup.

There is the overcoming of rust and and injuries and learning a new system from a new demanding coach.

But the pieces are here for an exciting playoff team and who knows how deep the run can be if the team stays healthy? Sports Illustrated in this most recent issue was very positive on the team’s potential.

I am a Gilbert Arenas fan. I believe that Gil has world class talent, drive and skills. He is now at that point in his career that wins are more important than personal stats and that he understands the benefits of team accomplishments. He loves the game and his teammates and the fans. He wants to come back and help the team win. End of story.

As many of you know, my sports partnership owns 100 percent of the Washington Capitals and 100 percent of the Washington Mystics. We also own 44 percent of the Verizon Center, the local Ticketmaster franchise and the Washington Wizards with an exclusive right to buy the rest when Mr. Pollin decides to sell the basketball team and related assets. We are Mr. Pollin’s minority partner in the team. We believe in what he has done to re-craft this team to be a world class attraction to the fans and to be a very competitive team that at minimum makes the playoffs again. Here’s to hoping for a healthy team and a great season. I know Mr. Pollin’s competitiveness burns bright and his fondest desire is to bring a championship to the fans of the Wizards.

It would be so great for our city to have playoff basketball in the district again. My belief is that both the Caps and Wizards make the playoffs and we are both utilizing the great facility that Mr. Pollin built for the fans come April and then later in the Fall. The Mystics are playing in the playoffs as well. Wouldn’t that be great?

NHL and NBA Right Around the Corner

Friday, September 25th, 2009

So great! The NHL season opens next week. The Caps play twice next week at Boston and then at home.

A month or so later, the NBA starts. The NHL opens earlier this season because of the planned Olympics break.

The Washington Wizards - in public and private - are very enthusiastic about the start of the new season. This is to be expected. We have a healthy core of key players after a long series of injuries; some new players added via trade; and some young players with more experience. Bad health and injuries is the number one enemy of many teams. If we stay healthy, I believe the Wizards will have one of the best teams in the East.

My prediction: The Wizards are the most improved team in the NBA and qualify for the playoffs.

Wouldn’t it be great to have one year where the Wizards, Capitals and Mystics all made the playoffs in the same season? That would be so great for the local respective fan bases.

SI Ranks Wizards 8th in Pre-season Poll

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Here is SI.com’s pre-season power rankings with the Washington Wizard’s ranked number number 8. That is great news for the franchise .  I hope SI is right. But — SI noted that the Capitals would be ranked 11th in the NHL pre season poll —- so on that front — I hope they are incorrect.  I am so conflicted.

Go Gil, Go

This article made me smile and made me happy. Read all about Gilbert Arenas right here

A healthy Gilbert Arenas - playing with attitude and speed - will be such a welcome sight at Verizon Center this coming season. Gil is the straw that stirs the drink.

As minority owners in the Wizards, we root for the team not only as fans but as partners too. And Gilbert Arenas is a charismatic player, one that you can’t take your eyes off of. I can’t wait to see a healthy and explosive Gilbert Arenas BACK in great form and sold out crowds cheering away to boot.

Mutual Respect MVP to MVP

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

The Wizards beat the Cavs last night in front of a full house. It was an exciting game and several Washington Capitals players were in the house to show their support for their friends on the Wizards team. It is wonderful to see the mutual support and respect the Wizards and Caps players show one another.

After the game, Alex Ovechkin asked to meet LeBron James. I brokered the meeting and, to be frank, it was fun to see both of these young men get to know one another. They are both passionate, funny and embrace their celebrity. They both are pretty good at what they do too. :-)

It was a fun night. We won the game. LeBron gets a Caps jersey to rock the red and some good memories were created.

A Fun Night - A Good Win

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Last night was a fun night at Verizon Center.

Our President was in attendance and the Wizards performed well to beat his hometown Chicago Bulls.

I thought the fans were all respectful and gracious. It was great to see the President out amongst the fans too.

Congratulations to Mr.  and Mrs. Pollin for hosting the President in their box as well. It was a good game and a night of memories.

When the going gets tough..

Monday, February 9th, 2009

This has been a very tough year for the Washington Wizards: A year of injuries; a coaching staff released; and a team that is playing young athletes that are all new to the NBA. The team is struggling and is into a rebuild in that, at times this season, it plays 2 of its starting 5 players compared to last season.

But in basketball, a rebuild can happen quickly. Next season, a Gilbert Arenas and Brendon Haywood can come back refreshed. A high draft pick can come in and make a statement and play big minutes. A trade can be made to add a starter. Suddenly a new five man unit is comprised; a new set of back ups is more seasoned and has young legs; and the team is easily transformed.

Last night reminded us all of the excellence in our core. Caron Butler, who has missed some games, came back and hit the buzzer beater. And for a moment, we were reminded of how well this team can play. Stars can hit big shots and we can win close games.

The Wizards will fight on this season but my bet is that the turnaround will happen fast, as soon as next season. We are all pulling for the franchise. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
